William Dalrymple
The Last Mughal: The Eclipse of a Dynasty, Delhi 1857

"William Dalrymple is that rarity: a scholar of history who can really write." - Salman Rushdie

In November 1862 Bahadur Shah Zafar II, the last Great Mughal, direct descendant of Genghis Khan and Tamburlane was buried in secrecy. One of the most talented, tolerant and likeable of his remarkable dynasty, who found himself in the position of leader of a violent uprising he knew from the start would lead to irreparable carnage. Highly acclaimed author William Dalrymple unearths groundbreaking new material to create the first English account of the last emperor, and the first narrative of the Mutiny to contain large quantities of material from the Indian perspective. The Last Mughul rapidly changes our understanding of a pivotal moment in Indian and Imperial history.

Flotsam & Jetsam

This participatory schools project run by Falmouth-based SciArt Solutions, gives an environmental perspective on littering and its marine consequences. The project contrasts the entities ‘flotsam’ (wreckage or debris that finds its way into the marine environment) with ‘jetsam’ (refuse or waste deposited intentionally into the sea) and incorporates a variety of visual and creative ways in which young people can find out about their environments. The results of this arts project will be on display at the festival.
